Project Value: $4.2M
Project Duration: October 2009 - May 2010
Client: Department of Transport and Main Roads/ New South Wales Roads & Transport Authority
Project Overview
Boonangar Bridge crosses the Barwon River on the Queensland - NSW Border and was a jointly funded project by the DMR Qld and the RTA in NSW. Due to the variations in the regulatory bodies between Qld and NSW; OH&S, Environmental and Traffic Management considerations have been complex and QB&C have been required to comply with both sets of regulations. The project was to replace the existing timber bridge at the Boonangar crossing with a 3 span concrete bridge on a new alignment and 1.5km’s of new roadworks.
Project Characteristics
- Consultation with Local Indigenous community with the identification, protection and relocation of a scar tree within the limits of the works.
- Bridgeworks involving two spans of fifteen meters and the centre span of 26 metres requiring a total of 42 driven pre cast piles and large pile caps all placed below water level.
- Overcoming the remote location of the site has been a major consideration for this project.
- Sourcing, testing and ensuring compliance of locally sourced embankment (17,000 m3) and pavement materials (6,000 m3) has been a challenge for this project especially give the long travelling distances involved for testing authorities. Pavement materials are being sourced from “White Rock” ridge gravel pits.
Key Project Outcomes
This project was being constructed in conjunction with both the Department of Main Roads and RTA. The project was completed in mid May 2010.
