Project Value: $126M (QBC - $35M)
Project Duration: June 2007 - December 2009
Client: Department of Transport & Main Roads
Project Overview
Replacement of 28 Timber Bridges with new Concrete Bridges in 28months.
Timber bridges at Stanthorpe, Warwick (2), Dalby, Kumbia near Kingaroy (2), Goomeri (3), Murgon (2), Moore near Kilcoy and Lowood (2) were replaced with new concrete bridges to Main Roads specifications. The work was carried out though an Alliance of which Queensland Bridge & Civil was a major participant. The Southern Queensland Accelerated Road Rehabilitation Programme (SQARRP) Alliance was also responsible for the road approaches to the new bridges. Approaches varied from 200 metres to 600 metres length on new alignments and road widening to those bridges that were replaced on the same alignment as the existing bridges. On these occasions side tracks were constructed to allow the travelling public to pass safely through the site.
Project Characteristics
- Consultation with local communities identified the needs of the community at each site so there was minimal disturbance to the public during construction.
- Bridgeworks varied in size, ranging from an 80 metre long, 5 span structures down to a single 14 metre span bridge.
- The programming of works to permit a constant flow of construction has been an exciting challenge, especially given that resources were being shared with another Alliance participant that was also constructing 14 new bridges during the same time frame.
- Local suppliers and subcontractors were employed throughout the construction of the bridges and roadworks to provide local communities with a real sense of ownership.
Key Project Outcomes
- This project, constructed in conjunction with 14 other bridges in the area between Goomeri and Bundaberg, provided 28 new bridges in 28 months for the Department of Main Roads that provided network upgrades years ahead of normal programming timeframes.
